Taqo Laqo: redefining modern menswear through confidence, individuality, and cultural expression.

Taqo Laqo is a contemporary menswear brand exploring products that celebrate African identity through modern design. As part of a design challenge, I developed Rhythm Nation, a textile concept that reimagines music as a visual language for everyday wear.

The project included cultural research, concept development, textile pattern design, colour exploration, and product mockups demonstrating the final application.

The Challenge

Today's menswear landscape is saturated with brands that rely on minimalist aesthetics to communicate luxury, often resulting in identities that feel interchangeable. While visually refined, many fail to express a unique personality or build a meaningful emotional connection with their audience.

The challenge was to create an identity that balanced sophistication with character—one that felt timeless, premium, and distinctly expressive without relying on trends.

Discovery & Research

To bridge the gap between tradition and modernity, I looked beyond fashion and into one of Africa's strongest cultural touchpoints: music.

Across the continent, music has long shaped identity, community, and self-expression. From traditional instruments and rhythmic patterns to contemporary genres like Afrobeats, Amapiano, Arbantone, and Bongo, rhythm remains a constant thread connecting generations despite changing trends.

This insight became the foundation of Rhythm Nation.

Visually, my research explored traditional African instruments, rhythmic pattern systems, live performances, nightlife, album artwork, and the energy surrounding today's music scene. Rather than reproducing traditional motifs, I focused on reinterpreting their spirit through bold contemporary graphics that could live naturally within modern menswear.

Design Process

The concept evolved around the idea that rhythm is an invisible force that connects people, cultures, and experiences. Much like music itself, I wanted the design to feel energetic, expressive, and full of movement.

The final pattern combines dancing figures, musical elements, and rhythmic graphic motifs to evoke the feeling of celebration rather than illustrating music literally. A vibrant palette of purples, pinks, and blues—drawn from stage lighting, nightlife, and performance spaces—reinforces this sense of movement while giving the garment a strong presence both on the shelf and when worn.

The repeating pattern was carefully refined to maintain visual balance across the garment, ensuring it remained bold and expressive without overwhelming the product.

Outcome & Reflection

Rhythm Nation transforms an everyday menswear piece into a celebration of contemporary African culture. By drawing inspiration from the continent's musical heritage and evolving creative scene, the concept creates a stronger emotional connection with its audience while offering the brand a distinctive visual direction within an increasingly crowded market.

Although created as part of a design challenge, the project reinforced the value of beginning with cultural insight rather than aesthetics alone. More importantly, it demonstrated how a single idea can grow into a scalable design system. Rhythm Nation has the potential to evolve beyond one garment into a wider collection inspired by different genres, instruments, and musical traditions across Africa, creating an expandable platform for storytelling through fashion.
